The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Pretoria, South Africa, successfully hosted a Tea Tasting Session on 11 November 2025, with the participation of over 20 South African representatives from various chambers, associations, and institutions.

This flagship initiative was organized with the objective of promoting Ceylon Tea among South Africans while introducing them to Sri Lanka’s rich tea culture.

 

Ms. Thiloka Perera, First Secretary (Commercial), provided an insightful introduction to Ceylon Tea and screened an informative video showcasing the Ceylon Tea manufacturing process, enabling participants to better understand the art and tradition of tea production in Sri Lanka.

 

The guests were introduced to high-grown, mid-grown, and low-grown teas before engaging in an interactive regional tea tasting session led by High Commissioner Air Chief Marshal Udeni Rajapaksha (Retd.) and the staff of the Mission.

 

The event concluded with remarks from Mr. Suminda Mendis, Minister of the Mission, followed by another round of tea tasting where guests enjoyed a selection of Ceylon black and flavoured teas, supported by Basilur Tea.

 

Guests were also treated to Ceylon Teas paired with traditional Sri Lankan delicacies, offering a memorable culinary and cultural experience. Throughout the session, promotional videos highlighted both Ceylon Tea and Sri Lanka’s vibrant tourism offerings.

 

To further enhance the promotional effort, a range of Ceylon Teas provided by the Sri Lanka Tea Board and Sri Lankan exporters was displayed and distributed among attendees.
